The responsibility for monitoring and regulating the environmental impact of the EKATI and Diavik Canadian diamond mines falls on two organizations: the Independent Environmental Monitoring Agency (EKATI) and the Environmental Monitoring Advisory Board (Diavik). These organizations are partnerships between the mine operators, local and federal government, and the local Aboriginal tribes.

Both organizations are run independently from the mines. As part of these organizations’ charters, Aboriginal tribes are guaranteed a majority of seats on these advisory panels. These tribes will continue to depend on the land, long after the mines are no longer productive, so they are in the best position to evaluate the long and short term environmental impacts of the mines.
